It’s a land where limestone gives the landscape a particularly fractured relief. A three-dimensional universe where the infinite horizons of the causses suddenly give way to the verticality of the deep gorges of the Tarn and Jonte rivers. Enclosed in narrow valleys, the swift waters of the Tarn and Jonte weave their way through the canyons they have carved out, walls 400 to 500 m high, whose ochre or reddish hues contrast with the many greens of the riverbanks. banks. The vast plateaus of the Causses, delimited by the course of the rivers, are arid and stony, but seemingly uniform: lunar deserts dotted with caves and avens from which emerge strangely shaped dolomites, traditional villages with dry stone with dry-stone houses and lauze roofs, and a pastoral life devoted to sheep farming. The vegetation is Mediterranean: lavender, carline, asphodel, asters, orchids in spring (some very rare), Scots pine and Salzburg pine and Salzmann pines, boxwoods, oaks and Montpellier maples.
