10,000 km from mainland France, in the heart of the Indian Ocean, Réunion is located 200 km north of the Tropic of Capricorn, 800 km east of Madagascar and 200 km west of Mauritius. Together with Mauritius and Rodrigues, it forms the Mascareignes archipelago. Volcanic and mountainous, Réunion peaks at 3,070 m on the Piton des Neiges. The subsidence of this ancient volcano created the magnificent cirques of Cilaos, Salazie and Mafate. Here, nature has remained in its purest state: luxuriant vegetation forests, waterfalls, breathtaking landscapes… Further east, a second mountain range, the marvellous Piton de la Fournaise (2,631 m) offers the intermittent spectacle of a still-active volcano amid lunar landscapes. This ensemble, known as the “interior” or “highlands”, is the soul and originality of the island. The “hauts” are also home to the domain of the “îlets” (islets), where lost villages have settled, far from the hustle and bustle of the coastline, and where time seems to have stood still.
In this hiking paradise, you’ll also have unforgettable encounters with simple, welcoming people.who will introduce you to the incomparable flavours of Creole cuisine.
