Distance 60 KM Time Estimated Access 1H &15 Min
Esna is about 485 miles (776 kilometers) south of Cairo and lies on the west bank of the Nile. It was
the ancient city of Senat, called Latopolis by the Greeks. It was "the city of the fish" where the Nile
perch fish was worshipped as divine. Today it is very famous for its river barrage and as a result, it is
a stopover for many cruise boats. The Temple of Esna, which was buried beneath its own debris for
many centuries, is located in the center of the town, close to the River Nile and only a short walk
from your boat through the local market.
From Esna to Edfu
Distance 65 KM Time Estimated Access 1H & 20 Min
Built during the Ptolemaic Kingdom between 237 and 57 BC, the Temple of Horus at Edfu is generally
regarded to be the best-preserved of the Ancient Egyptian sanctuaries. For 200 years, the structure
was buried under almost 40 feet (12 metres) of desert sand and silt from the Nile, which incredibly
helped to conserve it to near-perfection!
As the largest temple dedicated to Horus, one of Egypt's most important historic deities, statues of
the falcon-headed god are found throughout the complex, and its extensive wall carvings have
provided valuable information to historians about the Hellenistic period of Egyptian history: the
exquisite reliefs give us insight into the religion, mythology and way of life during the era.
(Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner at the Cruise)
From Edfu to Kom Ombo
Distance 63 KM Time Estimated Access 1H & 15 Min
The temple is unique for its dedication to two different deities: the local crocodile-headed god
Sobek, and the first "god of the Kingdom", the falcon-headed god Horus the Elder (also called
Haroeris). This double dedication was deliberate. Not only is it architecturally duplicated, with two
sets of courts, hypostyle halls and sanctuaries, the twin temple is symbolic of the local and
universalist themes that the two different deities represented.
While much of Kom Ombo temple has been destroyed over the millennia, it has been reconstructed
in part, and it is still home to a number of well-preserved and fascinating reliefs, including some
intricately carved columns and friezes divided between the two gods. The layout of the complex -
apart from being a double temple - is similar to that of the Temple of Edfu.
